So many websites offer advice on how to become an "e-learning specialist" or how e-learning is NEW and BETTER than...
Have you found a website that actually tried to define e-learning? It's very difficult. Perhaps because the e-learning evangelists don't really know what it is that they are promoting.
e-Learning is nothing more than Instructional Design with a focus on the Internet technologies available in the last ten years.
It's not new. It's not transformational. It's not disruptive. It is simply a focus on the tools and technology used in the very old concept of asynchronous distance learning.
The problem arises when these e-learning evangelists ignore the basic principles of ISD and infer that technology is the solution. It's never been the solution, and it never will be. Whether it promotes video tape (VHS Classroom), PowerPoint, Lectora, Captivate, or 2nd Life, these are only media tools. A poorly designed training event will still be poor regardless of the flashy technology used. A static, non-interactive video of a boring classroom lecture will become even more boring and less engaging whether viewed in 2nd Life or touted by prestigious University of Ivy League.
